As policies, practices, and perspectives change around diversity, equity, and inclusion, HR professionals may find themselves caught between what feels like a rock and a moral hard place. Individuals are feeling the heightened tensions between personal values and workplace obligations related to sustaining diverse communities. Ideally, there is alignment, but there is often conflict. This session is driven by dialogue and engagement. The individual HR professional is the focus of Part I.

SHRM Learning Objectives: 

(1) Examine the changing landscape of workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion;

(2) Identify and describe the ethical practices that inform personal and professional experiences; and

(3) recognize and describe the individual and organizational impact of moral tensions in the workplace

Speaker Bio:

Vidal Dickerson's career spans over 20 years in diversity, equity, and inclusion, higher education, and nonprofit organizations. He currently serves as the Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer at Christopher Newport University where he leads strategic initiatives, learning and development, and community relations.

Vidal is a member of the National Association for Diversity Officers in Higher Education, the National Association of African Americans in Human Resources, the Association for Talent Development, and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Locally, he serves on the Peninsula board of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, the City of Hampton Citizen’s Unity Commission, and as the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Chair for the Peninsula Chapter of the SHRM. He is a SHRM Senior Certified Professional, Certified Professional in Talent Development, and a Qualified Administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory.

Vidal is currently a doctoral candidate at The George Washington University, studying moral distress.
