Can We Really Talk About It? Politics in the Workplace

Is it possible to limit political discourse in the workplace? As an organization, should you want to? Join in this interactive discussion exploring the workplace challenges of political expression, examining the intersections of politics and diversity, equity, and inclusion, and identifying steps for facilitating civil discussions and positive employee behavior, especially during election seasons.

SHRM Learning Objective: 

Participants will:
- Investigate organizational policies and practices that promote/hinder political expression
- Examine political diversity and the ways that it interacts with other aspects of workplace diversity
- Identify specific actions that HR professionals and other leaders can take to promote civility and understanding

Speaker Bio:

Vidal Dickerson's diversity, equity, and inclusion career spans 25 years involving leadership development, education & training, and community relations initiatives. His experience has included direct responsibilities for support, programming, and education around race/ethnicity, religion & spirituality, gender & sexuality, disabilities/accessibility, among other areas of identity and diversity. 

Vidal is a resident of Hampton, VA and currently serves as the Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer at Christopher Newport University. He is an active member of the  National Association for Diversity Officers in Higher Education, the National Association of African Americans in Human Resources, the Association for Talent Development,   the American Association for Access, Equity, & Diversity, the Peninsula Chapter of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, and the past Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Chair for the Peninsula Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (PenSHRM). Vidal is a Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP), a Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD) as well as a Certified Facilitator for Narrative 4 (storytelling and civic engagement) and a Qualified Administrator for the Intercultural Development Inventor (IDI).
