This panel discussion with four top local executives will focus on changes not only in human resources but competencies needed in leadership development as a whole now and in the future. Each panel representative will further discuss and dive into transformational leadership, change management, strategic management, and stability. The discussion will last 90 minutes including open floor question and answer. At the end of the discussion, a survey will be conducted to uncover further training workshops needs in leadership development. The panel will be asked to identify the expectations of those in the human resources arenas, competencies needed and commonly missed or lacking in skill or effectiveness.
Learning Objectives:
  1. Attendees will better understand what it takes to be a transformational leader - and applicable competencies. 
  2. Attendees will better understand various ways to manage change, predict change and be proactive in the thriving in change.
  3. Attendees will be better understand the strength in perseverance and stability as leaders.
  4. Attendees will be better suited to plan strategically for business and people succession planning.
  5. Attendees will better understand why they need strong human resources leaders as well as the opportunities to develop leaders in the future. 

Panel members:

Jeff Wassmer, Chairman/CEO Spectrum
After 11 years active duty in the Air Force I went to work as a government contractor in Georgia and eventually started my own company - Spectrum. in 2000 moved the company to Hampton VA. Stayed in the Air National Guard and finished my 20 years in 2006. After 9/11 I was activated for one year in the Guard. Today Spectrum has over 200 employees and we operate in over 10 locations throughout the United States and overseas.

 

Mary Aldrich, COO, PB Mares
Mary leads all operational support functions for the firm, including Finance, HR, Learning & Development, IT, Administrative, Facilities and Practice Growth departments. She is an adjunct to the CEO in managing strategic direction, organizational design, enterprise risk, business lines and specialty practice departments and leads merger integration. She serves in multiple volunteer roles in professional associations and serves on multiple community boards. She was a 2016 Smart CEO Brava Award winner for high-impact female business leaders in the C-suite executives category and a 2011 recipient of the Inside Business Women in Business Achievement Award. She holds a Master of Arts in International Policy from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, and is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources, a SHRM Senior Certified Professional, and an Accredited Administrator in Accounting Practice Management. 

 

Susan Jacobs, VP of Human Resources, Huntington Ingalls Shipbuilding
Susan is vice president of human resources and administration for Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, located in Newport News, Va. She was appointed to this position in 2016 and is responsible for human resources administration, employment, labor relations and recruitment. She also has responsibility for the company’s security and environmental health and safety organizations. Jacobs has worked in the human resources industry since 1986 in various positions of increasing responsibility including senior director of human resources at L-3 Vertex Aerospace LLC. Prior to her current position and since 2007, she served as director of human resources and administration for Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, MS. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1984 and an MBA in marketing emphasis from the University of Southern Mississippi. Jacobs is also a graduate of Leadership Mississippi and the Gulf Coast Business Council Master’s Program. She currently holds the Senior Professional in Human Resources and Senior Certified Professional certifications from the Society for Human Resource Management. In the community, Jacobs serves on the board of directors for the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank, LEAD Virginia, the Hampton Roads Chamber and the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance.

 

Marisa Porto, Edictor-in-Chief, The Daily Press
Marisa oversees all news operations for The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va., the Daily Press in Newport News, Va., the Virginia Gazette in Williamsburg, Va., and the Tidewater Review in West Point, Va. Additional publications include Style Weekly, Inside Business and TidewaterBiz newsletter, NC Coast and Williamsburg Magazine.
